It’s not stretching it too far to compare the growth of GMS to an acorn that becomes an oak tree. The NASCAR racing team that originated in Las Vegas and is now headquartered in North Carolina started that small, and in less than a decade has become a highly respected organization that has won a Truck Series championship and performed notably in the Xfinity Series. The team has won two championships – 2016 and 2020.
Fueling a Legacy tells the story of how airline executive and entrepreneur Maury Gallagher offered sponsorship support to a talented teenage racer, Spencer Clark, almost two decades ago (2005 and 2006). After the tragic death of the young driver, and with his own son bearing the same first name and showing interest in auto racing, Maury tiptoed into the sport.
After some difficult early-years’ growing pains with GMS, a chance interview with a soft-spoken and multi-talented crew chief in 2014 proved fateful. In the last five-plus years, racing veteran Mike Beam has taken Gallagher’s team to unthought-of heights. With a resume that reveals his close working connections with everyone from Junior Johnson to Richard Petty to Bill Elliott to Mark Martin and Carl Edwards and dozens more, Beam has used his life’s passion and expertise to develop and oversee a NASCAR team that might be unprecedented in the last quarter century in its rapid rise to respectability.
Using interviews with several big-name drivers in auto racing, Fueling a Legacy charts the full story of building a racing team from the ground up.

Maury Gallagher
Maury is a Graduate of the University of California at Davis with a Bachelor of Arts in History and holds an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Gallagher has had a varied entrepreneurial career, primarily in the aviation and telecommunications industries, and currently, he and his wife, Marcia, reside in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mike Beam
Mike has had a storied career in the racing world. He got his start in 1972 as a sophomore in high school working at the concession stands at Hickory Motor Speedway, not too far from where he grew up.
Over the course of 50 years, he has come a long way in the sport and is now one of NASCAR’s most well-known and accomplished figures.
